Day 1 of 21 // Mark 1:1-20
START your time by saying a short prayer asking God to connect with you, to teach you, and to help you grow your relationships with Him.
READ Mark 1:1-20
BACKGROUND
The gospel of Mark is written by a man named John Mark. He was thought to have been traveling with Peter and recording most of his version of the life of Jesus from interviewing many of the people who followed Jesus. It’s often thought that Mark is the first gospel written and that many of the other 3 got quotes and stories from Him.
GOSPEL
Right out of the gate, we see that the “Good news” Mark mentions in verse one, is the reason he is writing. Mark is writing to tell others about the good news. What is that good news? The Greek word used here is euangélion. It has a connection to the idea of Ceasar and it is good news that a new Ceasar is on the throne. When you connect that with the idea of who Jesus is, it becomes even more full.
The gospel is the good news that a new king is on the throne, that is a good, gracious king. That king is Jesus Christ.
OBSERVE
As we explore Mark, I want you to get in the habit of writing down WHO you see, list WHAT they are doing, notice WHEN and WHERE they do things, and focus on WHY they do things (if it says why). Lastly, see if there are any unique observations about HOW they do those things.
For example, who is the person mentioned in vs 4? List what he does in the rest of the chapter. Comment on the WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW you see.
Write these observations down in your notebook under a section titled MARK 1:1-20.
Tomorrow, we are going to talk about what to do next. This is a great place to start.
